EMANUEL AX
opens the 25th season of
Madison Symphony Orchestra

One of the best-known concert pianists of our times will perform the Piano Concerto No. 2  by Johannes Brahms, while the MSO will also treat the audience to the Fanfare Ritmico by Jennifer Higdon and a suite of excerpts from the ballet Romeo and Julia by Sergei Prokofiev

“One of the truly great pianists of our time, Emanuel Ax is revered for his poetic temperament and the unsurpassed virtuosity of his playing. Ax performances are “never less than spellbinding....” (The New York Times)

On his website, Emanuel Ax lists Lvov, Poland as his birth place, although at the time of his birth (1949), Lvov was officially a part of Soviet Union.  In 1957, Emanuel moved with parents (both survivors of German concentration camps) to Poland, where he studied piano in the well-known, pre-conservatory music school "Miodowa" in Warsaw. Two years later, the family moved to Canada and then to the United States. In 1961, Emanuel continued his piano studies at the Juliard School under direction of the Polish-American pianist Mieczysław Munz.
