Adriana Lecouvreur
by Franceso Cilea

Starring: Anna Netrebko, Piotr Beczala,
Anita Rachvelishvili and Ambrogio Maestri

Piotr Beczala won the 2018 Male Singer of the Year
award at the International Opera Awards in London.

From the Marcus Theaters announcement: "Fathom Events and An encore performance of Cilea's Adriana Lecouvreur, will be shown in select cinemas nationwide on Wednesday, January 16. For the first time at the Met, Anna Netrebko sings the title role of Adriana Lecouvreur, the great 18th-century actress in love with the military hero Maurizio, sung by Piotr Beczala. Gianandrea Noseda conducts Cilea's tragedy, directed by Sir David McVicar, with the action partially set in a working replica of a Baroque theater. The cast also features Anita Rachvelishvili as the Princess of Bouillon, Adriana's rival for Maurizio's affections, and Ambrogio Maestri as Michonnet".

From the 1/4/2019 review on the OperaWire: "Vocally Beczala had a strong night singing with an ardent tone and gleaming high notes. His “La Dolcissima Effigie” began with a restrained sound that quickly exploded into desire as he phrased with a melting youthful timbre. His lines connected with ease and as he climaxed to the upper register the voice boomed. In the subsequent duet with Netrebko, Beczala brought out the full power in his voice, giving a sense of vocal and emotional abandon. Both voices communicated pure passion as their voice rose to the climaxes of Cilea’s music."

From the 1/1/2019 review by Frederic Golden: "Hard to imagine a better cast: Netrebko soared vocally, ranging from the full-throated spoken words of the title character’s stage recitations to the soaring notes of her death scene; 34- year-old Rachvelishvili, as her evil destroyer, showed why she is today’s reigning Verdian mezzo; and tenor Beczala brilliantly matched the vocal power of the ladies fighting for his affection. It was a New Year’s Eve to remember at the opera house."
