Great opportunity to hear a variety of truly beautiful music and experience the incomparable joys of live, in-person music making in concerts featuring:

TYRONE GREIVE, violin
Michael Keller, piano

Tyrone Greive, PHC Honorary Member and UW-Madison professor emeritus of violin, and Michael Keller, UW-Stevens Point professor emeritus of piano, will present a duo program contrasting different national styles and widely varied moods. A great opportunity to hear a variety of truly beautiful music and experience the incomparable joys of live, in-person music making, the concerts will take place on.

  • October 10th, 7pm, Oakwood Retirement Community-West;
  • October 12th, 7pm, Capitol Lakes Retirement Community;
  • October 14th, 12pm, First Unitarian Society Friday Noon Musicales Series.

Each performance will include W. A. Mozart’s delightfully Viennese Sonata in F Major, K. 376 (1781), Antonín Dvořák’s Czech styled and romantically expressive Ballade, op. 15 (B.139) (1884) and other shorter works, including music by three women – the warmly sensitive Romance No. 1 (1853) by Clara Schumann, the meditative Nocturne (1911) by French composer Lili Boulanger and the French neoclassic styled but folk influenced Slavonic Dance (1952) by Grażyna Bacewicz, one of Poland’s most important early 20 th-century composers.

Additionally, the program October 10th (Oakwood) and 12th (Capitol Lakes) will include  three other Polish selections – arrangements of the introspective Nocturne in C-sharp minor, op. posth. (1830) and the elegantly lilting Mazurka in A minor, op. 67, no. 4 (1846) by pianist-composer Frédérick Chopin and the exotically-flavored Fantaisie Orientale, op. 24 (1876) by the famous violinist-composer Henryk Wieniawski, as well as transcriptions of distinctly American flavored music from George Gershwin’s opera ‘Porgy and Bess’ (1935).

TYRONE GREIVE is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he taught the violin 1979-2013. He also was the long-time concertmaster of the Madison Symphony Orchestra, which he joined in 1979. In addition to extensive orchestral playing experience throughout much of the United States, often in the capacity as concertmaster, Greive has performed widely as recitalist, concerto soloist, and chamber musician. He also has devoted a number of his performances to Polish music, which he has extensively researched since the early1980s. Many of his chamber music performances have been with his wife Janet, and together they performed and taught together at numerous summer festivals and music camps.

Tyrone holds music degrees from Morningside University, Carnegie-Mellon University and The University of Michigan, but also pursued summertime violin and chamber music studies at the Meadowmount School of Music and the Aspen Music Festival. He also has held college and university teaching positions in South Dakota and Texas, and in 2018 the Wisconsin chapter of the American String Teachers Association named him the Wisconsin String Teacher of that year. Greive continues to add to his over 100 publications (e.g. numerous periodical articles of national and international circulation, contributions to books, CD recordings and performance editions), many of which are devoted to Polish violin repertoire and violin history.

Pianist MICHAEL KELLER has degrees from Indiana State University and the University of Illinois.  His teachers have included Howard Karp and French pianist Marylene Dosse.  As pianist for Donald Peck, former principal flutist of the Chicago Symphony, he performed recitals throughout the United States and recorded for WFMT Chicago.  He was also a member of the Lydian Trio formed by Mr. Peck with former cellist of the Pro Arte Quartet, Lowell Creitz.  As a soloist he has appeared on such series as Sunday Afternoon Live from the Chazen, the Dame Myra Hess Series and St. Martin in the Fields in London, England.  Mr. Keller was a member of the piano faculty at UW Stevens Point until retirement in 2009.  He now resides in Madison and maintains an active schedule as soloist, accompanist and clinician.
