Polish Immigration and Ethnic Identity in Milwaukee”

Presented by Dr Michael Stevens

More than two-thirds of a million Poles living in partitioned Poland immigrated to the US between 1900 and the beginning of WWI. This presentation explores issues of names, language, ties  with families back in Europe, and their decisions whether to stay in the US or too return.

About the Presenter: Born in Milwaukee, Michael E. Stevens remembers the aroma of kielbasa and sound of Polish being spoken at his immigrant grandparents' table.  He holds a PhD in history.  Retired form the historical Socieety, he servd for 25 years as state historian, historic preservation officer and division administrator. His most recent book, The Making of Pioneer Wisconsin: Voices of Early Settlers, was published by the WI Historical Society Press.
